Police Officers Federation of Minneapolis Endorses Republican Chris Madel for Governor

MINNEAPOLIS, MN (December 4, 2025) – The Police Officers Federation of Minneapolis has endorsed Chris Madel for Governor of Minnesota. Madel is seeking the Republican Party’s endorsement to defeat DFL incumbent Tim Walz.

The Police Officers Federation of Minneapolis is the union for Minneapolis police officers and represents over 580 officers up to the rank of captain who are employed by the City of Minneapolis and the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board. It is one of the largest non-affiliated law enforcement unions in the state of Minnesota.

“This endorsement reflects our confidence in [Madel’s] leadership, judgement, and commitment to strengthening public safety across our state,” Sherral Schmidt, the President of the Police Officers Federation of Minneapolis, said. “Throughout your career, you have demonstrated a deep understanding of the challenges facing law enforcement, as well as a genuine respect for the men and women who serve our communities every day.”

Schmidt also said that the Police Officers Federation of Minneapolis values Madel’s “willingness to engage directly, listen to concerns, and advocate for practical, balanced solutions that improve safety while respecting the rights and dignity of all Minnesotans” and that his “approach to leadership aligns with the steady, principled governance that our state urgently needs.”

In a statement, Madel said, “One of the greatest honors of my career has been representing police officers—including State Trooper Ryan Londregan in the politically motivated prosecution by Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty.” Madel concluded that he is “humbled to have the endorsement of the Police Officers Federation of Minneapolis” and “many law enforcement officers see a clear need to replace Governor Walz, and I’m honored to have their support.”
